Physicians
Our
physicians are either Board-certified or Board-eligible with the American Board
of Emergency Medicine. Also, most of them have held leadership positions with
PEP, Sentara, Virginia College of Emergency Physicians, American College of
Emergency Physicians, and/or the community.

Christopher L.
Baker, MD, FACEP
President
Dr. Chris Baker
completed his medical education at the University of Virginia, which was
followed by a residency in Emergency Medicine at Hennepin County Medical
Center in Minneapolis. He is certified by the American Board of
Emergency Medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency
Physicians.
He has been a
member of PEP since 2002 and was elected its President in 2008. He
currently serves on the Peer Review Committee at Sentara CarePlex and is
also the Operational Medical Director for
the City of Hampton Emergency Medical Services.

Andrew B. Cole, MD,
FACEP
Dr. Andy Cole
received his medical degree from the Eastern Virginia School of Medicine
and completed his residency there as well. He is certified by the
American Board of Emergency Medicine and is a fellow in the American
College of Emergency Physicians.
He became a member of PEP in 1995 and was its President from
2002 to 2008. He has actively served various medical staff responsibilities of
Sentara CarePlex, such as Credentials Committee, Ethics Committee, and
Medical Executive Committee. Additionally, he has held leadership roles
in the Virginia College of Emergency Physicians, to include President
and Board Member.

Charles W. Erdman,
MD, ABEM
Assistant Medical Director - CarePlex
Dr.
Chuck Erdman completed medical school at USUHS (Uniformed Services
University of Health Sciences) followed by a surgical internship at
National Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. He subsequently served 6
years with the U.S. Marine Corps as a general medical officer and diving
medical officer. His deployments included Norway, Turkey, Puerto Rico,
and Alaska as well as a 6-month tour of duty in Kuwait in support of
Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Dr. Erdman
completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Portsmouth Naval
Hospital in 2003 with 3 years as an attending physician afterward.
Certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine, he joined PEP in
2006 and became its Assistant Medical Director at Sentara CarePlex in
2008.

Robin B. Garelick, MD,
FACEP
First Vice President
Dr. Robin
Garelick received her medical degree from the Eastern Virginia School of
Medicine and subsequently completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at
the Orlando Regional Medical Center in Florida. She is certified by the
American Board of Emergency Medicine and is a fellow in the American
College of Emergency Physicians.
She joined PEP in 2002 and is currently the
Forensic Medical Director at Sentara CarePlex. In addition, she serves
on the Critical Care Committee as the Emergency Department
Representative for the Society of Critical Care Medicine Surviving
Sepsis Campaign for Sentara CarePlex and Sentara Port Warwick. Further,
her support of mentorship programs in high schools on the Peninsula
continues through active participation.

Jason T. Garrison, MD,
FACEP, FAAEM
Dr. Jason Garrison earned his medical degree at the Eastern Virginia
Medical School and completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at the
Louisiana State University School of Medicine. He is certified by
the American Board of Emergency Medicine and is a fellow in both the
American College of Emergency Physicians and the American Academy of
Emergency Medicine.
He became a member of
PEP in 2002 – having previously worked in the Emergency Departments of
Sentara Bayside Hospital in Virginia Beach, Medical College of Virginia
in Richmond, and Charity Hospital in New Orleans – and actively serves
on the Performance Improvement Committee of Sentara CarePlex. He has
extensive experience with and is a Consultant in Hyperbaric Medicine at
Sentara Port Warwick.
Additionally, he is the Operational
Medical Director for both the Poquoson Fire Department and the
Carrollton Fire Department.

Paul V. Gibney, MD,
FACEP
Dr. Paul Gibney
earned his medical degree at the State University of New York at Stony
Brook. He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at the
University of Cincinnati, where he was subsequently an Associate
Professor of Emergency Medicine. He is certified by the American Board
of Emergency Medicine and is a fellow in the American College of
Emergency Physicians.
He joined PEP in
2002 and has served as Medical Director of the Emergency Department at
Sentara CarePlex and Sentara Port Warwick. Currently, he is active on
the Medical Executive Committee and as Hospital-Based Services Chief at
Sentara CarePlex.

James L. Hecht, MD, ABEM
Dr. Jim Hecht earned
his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia, then completed
his residency in Emergency Medicine at the Eastern Virginia School of
Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
Although he joined PEP in 2006, he has been practicing Emergency
Medicine on the Peninsula – at Mary Immaculate Hospital – since 1984 and
was Medical Director of its Emergency Department several times. Also,
he has served as Operational Medical Director of the Peninsula EMS
Region as well as the Abingdon Volunteer Rescue Squad.

William M. Hunter, MD,
FACEP
Dr. Bill Hunter received his
medical degree from the University of Cincinnati, then completed his
first two years of residency in Internal Medicine at Rush Presbyterian
St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. He served two
years with the U.S. Army Medical Corps before returning to complete the
final year of residency.
He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine as well as
the American Board of Emergency Medicine and is a fellow in the American
College of Emergency Physicians.
He has been practicing Emergency Medicine with PEP since 1975. He has
served as the Chairman of the Emergency Departments at both Sentara
Hampton General Hospital and Mary Immaculate Hospital.

Jeffrey D. Johnson, MD,
FACEP
Dr. Jeff
Johnson earned his medical degree at the Eastern Virginia Medical School
and completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at Christiana Care
Medical Center in Delaware. He is certified by the American Board of
Emergency Medicine and a fellow in the American College of Emergency
Medicine.
He joined PEP in 2005 and is currently serving on the STEMI committee at
Sentara CarePlex.

Leslie M. Levin, MD, ABEM
Dr. Les Levin received his medical
education at the Eastern Virginia Medical School, which was followed by
a residency in Emergency Medicine at Orlando Regional Medical Center. He
is certified
through the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
He
joined PEP in 2006.

John E. Lewis, Jr., MD,
ABEM
Dr. John Lewis received his medical education from the Howard University
College of Medicine and completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at
Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. He is certified by the
American Board of Emergency Medicine.
He became a member of PEP in 2004. He has been an Instructor of Anatomy
and Physiology at Hampton University and Thomas Nelson Community College
– and maintains professional interest in emergency ultrasonography,
medical education, and physician wellness.

Geofrey D.
Nochimson, MD, FACEP
Medical Director
Dr. Geoff Nochimson earned his medical
degree at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He completed a
residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Florida in
Jacksonville. He is certified by the American Board of Emergency
Medicine and is a fellow in the American College of Emergency
Physicians.
He became a member of PEP in 1992 and
currently serves on the Peer Review Committee of Sentara CarePlex. In
addition, he is the Medical Director for the Emergency Department at
Sentara CarePlex and Sentara Port Warwick.

Jeremiah K. O’Shea, MD,
FACEP
Dr. Jake O’Shea earned his medical degree at the
University of Virginia and completed an affiliated residency in
Emergency Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. He is certified by
the American Board of Emergency Medicine and is a Fellow in the American
College of Emergency Physicians.
Since joining PEP in 2004, he has become actively involved in medical
informatics as an eCare Health Network Physician Advisor at Sentara
Healthcare and is the Chair of the Physician I.T. Steering Committee at
Sentara CarePlex. He is currently serving a 3-year term on the Board of
Directors of the Virginia College of Emergency Physicians.

Paul D. Osborne, MD,
FACEP
Dr. Paul Osborne graduated from the University of South Florida College
of Medicine and completed a year of residency at the Orlando Regional
Medical Center. Upon 3 years’ experience as a General Medical Officer
with the U.S. Navy, he returned to finish his residency in Emergency
Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School. He is certified by the
American Board of Emergency Medicine and is a fellow in the American
College of Emergency Physicians.
He has been a member of PEP since 1992. He has served as Chairman of
the Emergency Department at Sentara Hampton General Hospital and is a
Consultant in Hyperbaric Medicine at Sentara Port Warwick.

Michael W. Potter, MD,
FACEP
Dr. Mike Potter completed his medical degree and
residency in Emergency Medicine at the Eastern Virginia Medical School.
He is certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and is a
fellow in the American College of Emergency Physicians.
He became a member of PEP in 1997. At Sentara
CarePlex, he has actively served on the Performance Improvement
Committee and currently chairs the Credentials Committee. At the
Virginia College of Emergency Physicians, his service on numerous
committees features Chair of the Health Finance and Reimbursement
Committee and two 3-year terms on the Board of Directors which included
two years as Treasurer.

Stephen M.
Quinn, MD, FACEP
Assistant Medical Director -
Port Warwick
Dr. Steve Quinn
graduated from the Medical College of Virginia, then completed an
affiliated residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of
Pittsburgh. He maintains a strong professional interest in Emergency
Medical Services per several years’ experience as a paramedic prior to
medical school. He is certified by the American Board of Emergency
Medicine.
He joined PEP in 2004
and became its Assistant Medical Director at
Sentara Port Warwick in 2008.

Christopher H. Register, DO, ABEM
Dr. Chris Register
obtained his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Kirksville
College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri. His residency at Pitt
County Memorial Hospital in North Carolina was followed by a fellowship
at that facility in Critical Care Air Medical Transport with EastCare
Air Ambulance Service. He is
certified through the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
He
joined PEP in 2006.

Gilbert F. Schmidt,
Jr., MD, JD, FACEP
Dr. Gil Schmidt earned his medical degree at Wayne State University
School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan, then began his post-graduate
education at Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Internal Medicine. He served
with the U.S. Navy for 5 years and was awarded the Commendation Medal
for his work in Emergency Medicine. He is certified by the American
Board of Emergency Medicine and is a fellow in the American College of
Emergency Physicians. Additionally, he earned his law degree at The
College of William & Mary Marshall-Wythe School of Law, is certified by
the American College of Legal Medicine, and is a fellow in the American
College of Legal Medicine.
He became a member
of PEP in 1984, was President for many years, and the previous
Medical Director. At Sentara CarePlex, he has been the Chairman of the Emergency Department,
Medical Staff President, and Medical Affairs Vice President, and
currently chairs the Performance Improvement and Peer Review
Committees. Also, he has served as President of the Virginia College of
Emergency Physicians.

Medicine and attended his residency at Wright State University School of
Medicine. He most recently served as Medical Director for Licking
Memorial Hospital in Ohio. He is certified by the American Board of
Emergency Medicine.
He
joined PEP in 2006.

Joshua R. Smith, MD, ABEM
Dr. Josh Smith earned
his medical degree at the University of Miami School of Medicine and
completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Orlando Regional
Medical Center in Florida. He is currently in the process of becoming
certified through the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
He joined PEP in
2005 and serves on the Ethics Committee at Sentara CarePlex.
